Ophthalmologists receive fewer patient complaints overall compared with other physicians, but ophthalmologists working at academic centers receive a disproportionately higher number of complaints within the field, according to a study published online November 13 in Ophthalmology. Sahar Kohanim, MD, MPH, director of patient safety and quality at Vanderbilt Eye Institute in Nashville, Tennessee, and colleagues say, "The most common concerns raised against ophthalmologists were related to care and treatment, followed by access and availability, communication, concern for patient and family, and billing concerns. Concerns regarding the safety of the practice environment were rare."
